First let me say howdy! I'm just starting to get into the whole online community stuff. And hope it soon leads to real life rides and whatnot.
I'm also getting back to Jeep after several years of cars and non-Jeep trucks. I'm going to be in the market for a Jeep very soon and am trying to narrow what it is that I want. Being an old school backyard mechanic, my knowledge stops at 1976 or so. The only electric that should be on an engine is ignition, starter and alt. I've been reading A LOT on various CJs and YJs and have sort of come to the conclusion that some other electrical stuff may not necessarily be bad. (I'm still trying to wrap some of my brain around that!) Also in my reading I have seen that certain years should probably be avoided like the plague; certain tranys, trans cases, etc.
Since my knowledge is limited, and from what I've read here, y'all seem like pretty cool and knowledgeable folk, I'm wondering what you would be looking for if you were in my situation. This will be a 50/50 DD and mud pig/trail rig. I have a beater for getting me around if/when the Jeep is down, but of course I would rather drive a Jeep. I would prefer either a I6 or v8. And I lean more toward the CJ. Although I like that the YJs don't rot out as quickly. I realize that we're talking 30+ year old vehicles that may have been modified already, but to add to my basic knowledge of what to look for would be helpful. And who better to ask about Jeeps than Jeep folk!
One last question... is it Jeepers, Jeep people, Jeep folk, Jeepians?
