In my 2001 Cherokee the check gauges light came on. The volt meter goes to about 10 volts when you start the Jeep. Then drops to 9 after a few seconds. The lights are real dim but still runs? New battery about a month ago.
Any ideas? altenator?
Thanks for any help.

Don't think that the alternator is putting out.Jump it off another car and leave the other car running. Then check the volt meter. Also verify the voltage reading with a multimeter across both posts of the battery.Might be as simple as a bad(dirty)ground. Vince

Thanks -- that was my thoughts too. I will test it and see what its doing. Figures we have about 8 inches of snow now. To cold to crawl under and pull it today. The alenator on this thing is in a fun spot below the a/c. Nothing is ever easy. Thanks for your help.

Yea I think thats it. I just cleaned and checked the voltage and its not right.
John I had a 89 YJ for a long time and it was easy to work on for sure. The alternator is dry so I dont think that was it.
Thanks hopefully Saturday is warmer not much fum laying on the ground in this.

It sounds like the alternator an you can get out of the top it is not that hard All the A/C stuff is above the alternator. I'm going to start tonight in removing everything and pulling the alternator. If I can get it from the top I'd be a happy person.

John its not like that. It doesn't have an auto tensioner but a system with a bolt tensioner. I cant seem to get the two bolts loose. The top one is easy the bottom one is buried and I cant get a wrench to it. That why I'm not sure thats it. Its way to hard and should be easier. Once I loosen the tension I can pull the alternator from the bottom, thats easy. The book I have is crappy and say to loosen the power steering pump, thats it. My rubicon has an auto tensioner and thats easy to pop the belt.

Fixed! It was the alternator. To free the the tension, loosen the tension pulley bolt first. Its right in the center of the pulley. Then loosen the tensioner bolt and the belt comes right off.
Take out the battery and remove the alternator from the top and pull it from under the a/c pump and to the side and its out.
All took about 2 hours from start to finish.
Thanks for everyones help.
