Over my past three runs i have noticed oil pressure dropping. I have to run the jeep for about an hour++ and heat it up real good. Once I get to this point if I come to a red light or stop the oil pressure drops quick to almost zero. I can tap the gas and it shoots right back up to 40...
I thought maybe i am running too thin of an oil(10-30w cheap pepboys oil). I change the oil almost every other run considering i beat it. Should i start getting worried bigger problems are ahead? I have 160K on it. My 03 Rubicon gave me the same issue once but went away on its own. The engine seems to run fine.
Any thoughts?
I have a feeling there is an exhaust blockage starting, which would heat the engine/trans more. Since I took the carpet out this thing just seems to be hot, but figure it is NO CARPET making it hot. sssoooo maybe i am running hotter then normal which would heat up the oil and thin it more and lower oil pressure. Seems like a long shot but ,,,,,,,

Sounds like a cloggged oil filter, but you change it regularly. How's the oil pump ?

i was thinking the same. I just didnt want to pull the pan.... Its about due for a fluid change so i will try that and see what happens. I'll try the mobile one filter(i always thought these were goo)

Bob, Don't go to the extreme.Replace the oil pressure sending unit.If that doesn't correct the problem then go into the engine. Vince

I agree the sending unit may have slug on it and in it. Like Vince said try that first.

Seriously try the little things first. Does it start tapping at idle? Thats a sure sign of lack of pressure.

no I do not get any noise at all. I have thought of so many little issues it could be, i will just start small and build from there. I think there are a combination of issues here. I think chip may be right with a filter. I think Dennis has a point with a thicker oil. I am really think its bad/thin oil. It only does it when the motor is hot. I have always used cheap filters and oil(being i have to change it so often with the wheeling we do). I buy some mobile one..
Vince I will also pull the sending unit and check that out.
I will keep you posted..

I've heard the same thing about synthetic, however i use it in my truck. For the jeep, I just changed to 15W40 Rotella-T, its heavy duty oil used in diesels and heavy equipment. Its supposedly one of the only conventional oils that still contains zinc, which is supposed to be better for older engines, they sell it at Wal-Mart for 11 bucks for a 4 quart container, and 3 bucks a quart, more than half the price of Mobil 1, if you wanted a good conventional oil, 4 bucks for a Fram filter, and you could change your oil for around 20 bucks! My YJ has 152k on the motor, and I have to say that I have more oil pressure and it runs quieter with the Rotella. Thats my 2 cents!
P.S. I just picked up an 8,000 pound Milemarker winch off Craigslist monday night, so next trip out, I might be able to pull myself out!

Install a mechanical oil pressure gauge and new sender with a tee. My oil pressure on both rigs runs low at idle on a hot day. The oil pressure specification for the 4.0L is 13 psi at idle and between 37 and 75 psi at 1600RPM and above. My pressure runs about 20 psi at idle and 45 at 2000 rpm on both rigs. (been this way since new)

I thought about installing new gauges. I though maybe mine may read incorrect/ I think with the fuse box on the floor and having it under water cant be good.. I also need a trans temp gauge. Maybe i can pick up a gauge pod for the a pillar....

I have the same problem with my XJ (158k miles) except I have a little bottom end noise along with the low pressure. I used the Rotella (bought extra from an oil change in my motorhome) it did bring the pressure up & quiet the engine down a little. Now it only sounds like a diesel when I start it (bottom end rattle for a few seconds). I'm not a fan of Fram filters though. You could also go with 20w-50.
