From what I understand all lifted/modified rules still apply. I don't believe they changed anything as far as that stuff. If you had a stock jeep then there is no safety inspection but tilt tests ect still apply apparently. Atleast that's what I read in the other forums. I looked for information on the NJDMV website and it's not very clear on what they inspect now. I even asked a friend of mine who is an officer and he thought that we didn't have to worryt about it anymore but he wasn't sure either that he had to check. BUT, where he is, he said that they really don't bust people for lifted and modified vehicles anyway. He's a cool cop. LOL!

There is still a max. door height requirement. You still need to have the tires covered by flares. And with full width rears it's only a matter of time until the Park Police or Conservation Officers start busting your hump!

OK Here's the skinny. I took the LJ for her anal probing this morning and she passed!! While I was there I figured I'd pick the tech's brain. I asked how the lift requirements work and this is what I got. He told me they were told not to turn anybody away no matter how high it is. I asked about the tires sticking out. He told me it don't matter if they stick out 2 feet they don't turn anybody away. He also added how they are inspecting cars with no brake lights, steel cords showing on the tires and broken windshields. They all pass! The catch is if a cop pulls you over, he can ticket you for the violations. So now that makes a whole new gray area in my mind! Is there a ticket for tires that stick out? Is there a ticket for a vehicle being to high? Anyway I wasted my time changing my tires. I even changed the spare. I think it does eliminate one possible ticket. Alteration after inspection!

They USED to flag all that at Inspection time. When the budget was cut, they dropped EVERY PART OF THE INSPECTION EXCEPT EMISSIONS. They hook up the OBD port...measure the exhaust, etc...but tires, brakes, lights, height.... ...nada. The last inspection of my trail rig, they spent 4 HOURS crawling all over it, checking welds on the frame, the tires, the door heights, the snorkel, and so forth..... ...and they failed me because my oem HORN wasn't loud enough. NOW...just emissions, in/out, getyersticker. So, the LAWS are the same, but, the State Inspection STATIONS are no longer required to check. An officer on patrol, etc...is still free to cite you on whatever he observes/suspects is not ok. If the patrols in the pines for example are going to "crack down" in response to green pressure, etc....they MAY go for that type of enforcement. The last time I was snagged in the pines by a patrol, one guy with his kid's car, w/o insurance, had to get towed, but no one with exposed tires, etc got a hard time other than a "Stern Talking to" about not off roading, etc. (Ironically, we were off roading WITH a trooper, who thought the area was OK too...) So - State STATIONS no longer look at anything but emissions....your brake lights, and other stuff any car used to fail for, etc - are no longer even looked at.
