still having problems with my head . i had the engine rebuilt a year ago new cam lifters springs pistons the works, kept the rocker arms and push rods. been having noise the whole time tapping like a sewing machine. i opened the valve cover and 1 cyliner 1st rocker loose as hell 2nd push rod bent when engine cranking all but the very 1st rocker is moving and when i push down on the rocker on top of the rod it goes down a little none of the other ones do that so im thinking my 1st lifter is bad my 2nd pushrod is bent . and a couple of the rockers are loose n it feels like im running on 5 cylinders runs bad n noisey. hydrolic lifters theres not adjustment n the rockers u cant adjust. how do i get rid of the sloppyness n all the noise im looking at roller rockers im hoping this will help as well as replacing the bent push rod. anyone know anything about this

Here is what I know... Hydraulics need to be set up when installed. What I do is run the engine with the lifters adjusted as well as possible when not running and rotating the crank and adjusting just so the push rod can be turned by your fingers. Start your engine and turn the rocker nut until the noise just goes away, then i/4 turn more. Lifters take a moment to get oil inside them. Some people leave them in oil for several hours before installing, I have never done that. Now, if you have lifters that were installed incorrectly then chances are pretty good that your cam is worn, which means you would have to replace that. Roller cam... depends on (my opinion) what your trying to achieve. Rollers are nice but expensive and not necessary for low rpm running. If I was racing (like back in the day) rollers are an option when shifting at 8,000 and above rpm with high horses...

The last motor i did i let the lifters soak in oil for a day than when i installed every thing i did the drill prime on the oil pump till i had oil every where,Than just adjust your rockers if they are adjustable. I know the new motor i have in the rig now they are not adjustable rockers,,,

Here is what I meant to say. I think I said way too much last time. 1) install all the lifters 2) insert all the push rods 3) place the rockers and start snugging 4) Rotate the crank and keep finding the loose lifters and keep snugging the bolt 5) repeat (4) until they all seem about the same 6) Torque all the bolts to 21 to 28 ft.lbs of torque That's it..... Start the engine and you might hear some tapping noise for awhile until all the lifters get filled with oil. This could be a few minutes or less.
The main question is why did the push rod bend?

Well Bill I really sense that you are struggling with the jeep. I can relate. Nonetheless when you discus technical stuff, I am pretty much at a loss. My warped sense of humor wishes to report that the close as I get to rocker arms, is on my front porch, sitting on my rocker enjoying the sun yesterday after I finished washing my truck and jeep.
In all honesty, I would love to come over to help, my specialty is gopher running around to pick up parts, or handing tools. Let me know if there is anything I can do. Chuck
