On Saturday, I was using my winch to pull some debris up a steep slope so it could be thrown away. My winch made an awful grinding noise but kept on pulling... Any ideas? It is a Warn 9000

Sounds possibly like a gear in the motor. Was it smoking or overheating ?

definately no smoke, I did not notice overheating. I found a web page showing step by step disassembly for a similar warn winch so when I have time (not this week), I will pull it apart and see what is going on. It is several years old and was thoroughly abused before I started beating on it (pulling trees down, pulling picnic tables out of a dam spillway, and general offroading use). I'm sure it's time for a cleaning and overhaul. www.fourwheeler.com/techarticles/electrical/129_0708_warn_m8000_winch_breakdown/index.html
