Well i believe Chip touch base on it,,,but again there's a lot of guy's in the club that would lend a hand on a build,,,No need to know how to weld,,there's a few guy's here that are welder's by trade,,,,, As for most of the other stuff involved in a lift it's easy no need to be a master mechanic,,a lift can be installed in a day with some standard hand tools.
Start with your lift and tires get that part done,,,an axle swap is easy as well can be done in a few hr's.
That 8.8 is a good base to start with,,but with any swap remember your going to have to change your gearing in the front to match what ever in the new rear,,so your going to need a guy who knows how to set up gears!! Throw out the question to one of the welders what would it take for you to weld up some new brackets on a rear for me??? maybe a few cold ones and some grub.
There's a lot of knowledge in this club and guy's willing to help out.

We'll be happy to help you each step of the way. Besides, you have a great starting point with the Jeep you have now. You'd be crazy to buy someone else's headache.

Waterman and everyone else, thanks for the encouragement, I guess my biggest problem is starting. I feel like there is so much to do that it is a daunting task. I like to do everything right and unfortunately I have no patience so I want it right now. For example, I want a lift and tires but I know that I probably need to get a stronger axle and I'd rather get the right base now in case I want to go bigger in the future. I do take pride in doing things myself and that is my biggest problem with buying a built jeep. In the end, I will (probably) build my own because it will be more gratifying as well as good experience. By the way, starting point is a 97 Sport TJ. I've read about the ford explorer 8.8 axle swap but welding is not on my resume. I saw the one for sale but it is set up for the YJ leaf suspension. Just take your time. It may take a while but so what ? Ask any Jeeper, your never really done. We all have a wish-list that gets longer everytime we start it up.

Ok so I'm in the market for a new axle if you guys hear or see one somewhere let me know. The one in the for sale section is sold. I'm looking for a dana 44 or ford 8.8, direct bolt in for the tj would be ideal. Thanks

Yea I'm interested to see how this plays out. The guy is pretty believable in his emails. He said he's a certified mechanic etc etc. Looks like the gas prices and longer commute got to him and he got a ford focus.
