I'm thinking of trading in my jeep for this one.... cnj.craigslist.org/car/781273296.htmlWhat do you guys think, it would save me a lot of work of doing things myself and I don't know how I feel about it because I would like to see my jeep become this but I thinkg money wise it makes perfect sense - especially because my 3.07 D35 is my biggest drawback. Thanks guys.

Yes, it comes with a soft top, a few small holes and the ad doesn't not mention but it only has 64,000 miles.
Anyone have any insight on..."Steering box seeps from the input shaft." I am not mechanically inclined but this doesn't seem as a deal breaker though.
Any suggestions what I should look for when I go look at it?

you can replace the steering box its in a hard spot but can be done in a day. check that out before you get excited.
Also drive it to see if it got beat up on the trail. Look for leaky axle seals and around the cluch housing or bell housing. Check to see how far it was buried in the mud by looking behind the glove box to see if theres any mud back there. If it was buried in the mud I would for get it as you dont know what your getting and since your not a mechanic it could be costly. Give it a good look over.
If you see or feel any issues offer him 1500 less.
Good luck

Just make sure your not getting someone's beater. That's a lot of money and it's definately been wheeled. Get underneath it and check for oil blotches, fluids, surface rust, etc.
I would never buy a built Jeep. Personally I'd look for a used stock Jeep that has never seen dirt and morph it into an off road beast. I'd buy an early model TJ (or keep yours) for around $ 5,000.00. Dump a few grand into it and your good to go. That's just my 2 cents.

X3... I'd much rather have the satisfaction of building it my way than buying it already done... Plus this is how we learn to wrench our rigs, plenty of willing folks in here with tons of Jeep knowledge always looking to lend a helping hand...

im going to agree with the crowd. you dont know what that jeep has been through and how reliable it will be in the long run. id just keep what you have and build it up to what you want.

REAL JEEPS ARE BUILT NOT BOUGHT . i recomend building your own you gonna end up knowing your jeep inside and out you will know what every squeak is it will become part of you and its all yours , and building your own when a trail fix needs to happen you wont be afraid to get in to it and fix it cause you know "your " jeep they grow personality

Well I'm all for building my own, in fact I would certainy prefer it this way. Unfortunately I don't know much about cars so even if I build my own, the mechanic down the street would (probably) be doing the work.
I don't mind getting dirty and doing the work so maybe its time to start learning about the jeep. Maybe I'll give it a try and see what happens one of these days. I mean, changing oil is probalby a lot different then putting in a lift or an axle and that is just about as far as I have gone.

Nice work Austin !
But everyone is right. When most of us got into Jeeping we didn't know a darn thing about Jeeps. Part of the fun is learning and taking on new projects. Take your time and build it to your satisfaction.
You can find great write-ups and how to do it yourself stuff all over the web. We'll be glad to help you if you need help with anything. Bring it on down. "We wrench on Saturday's, and wheel on Sundays".
I bought my Jeep bone stock and I can tell you every inch of it, and know it like the back of my hand ..... no suprises here. I wouldn't do it any other way. You don't want to get a wheeled Jeep home and 2 months later find out half of it's held together with ductape or chewing gum.
There's usually a darn good reason when someone parts with something they've put that much time & effort into. Once again that's just my personal opinion.

It seems as though your ahead of the game having a rig all ready???
$8500 HUMMMM Sounds to me someone is offing there headache,,
Put the money in to your rig,,,the dana35,,replace with an ford 8.8 ( one for sale on this site $600) regear the front to match there's a grand
new winch $900 new lift $1000-2000 depends on how extream ya want to go new rubber$1000 or so depending on your choice of tire and where ya get them
I could keep going on with that $8500 and have a hell of a rig to wheel
Im i on the right track here guys?

Waterman and everyone else, thanks for the encouragement, I guess my biggest problem is starting. I feel like there is so much to do that it is a daunting task. I like to do everything right and unfortunately I have no patience so I want it right now. For example, I want a lift and tires but I know that I probably need to get a stronger axle and I'd rather get the right base now in case I want to go bigger in the future. I do take pride in doing things myself and that is my biggest problem with buying a built jeep. In the end, I will (probably) build my own because it will be more gratifying as well as good experience.
By the way, starting point is a 97 Sport TJ. I've read about the ford explorer 8.8 axle swap but welding is not on my resume. I saw the one for sale but it is set up for the YJ leaf suspension.
