Well my kid came to me and said the jeep is making a noise can I check it out. Well I checked it out! It's sounds like a rod knock to me. Do you think 265,000 miles and running it with low oil had anything to do with it. So I need a 4.0 for my XJ

Check the NAXJA.org forums too if that doesnt pan out, there's usually one or two on there for reasonable. Be careful what you wish for with the Lucas treatment, now it might never blow up. If you need any tips on swapping the motor (there are a few XJ-specific tricks that will save you a lot of time, and I've done 3 so far), hit me up and I can help ya out.

Thanks Rich I'm not even sure its the motor anymore. It doesn't knock all the time! Any ideas what else it could be.

....does it knock on the "downside" of giving it fuel? Example: in gear, accelerating, there is no knock, but as soon as you let off the throttle, there is a chirpy, clattering sound?

Well I don't need it anymore. Turns out It wasn't even the motor. I was thinking and back when I had my '72 Grand prix It was 10 yrs old then I had a similar sound It was a cracked flex plate. So I pulled the trans today and what did I find. The flex plate was cracked all the way around the crank bolts. There was about a 1/4" of metal not cracked. Now find the flex plate so I went to Greenfield dodge can't get it. Advanced auto no. My parts guy no listing. Auto zone no. Coleman jeep Chrysler took there computers they can't even look it up. My girl at the bone yard she don't keep them. Joe's transmission no AAmco no Napa no Trenton auto salvage YES $45
